I've been a horrible, horrible blogger. It's been much too long and now there are so many things going on in my life and so many things that have passed by to catch up on...that it's overwhelming to think about updating.
BUT, reading an article this morning on Detroit's auto industry gave me the push I needed because I wanted to broadcast this specific sentiment, and it was much too long for a facebook status. I read this quote in an article on msnbc.com: "But at a time when demand is ebbing for traditional truck products, and upcoming emissions and mileage regulations — never mind shifting social trends — favor car-based vehicles, Detroit is seeing the folly of its ways." I just want to say that I back GM, 100%. The "folly of its ways"?! Let me tell you something right now. In the 90's and early 2000's, there was a HUGE demand for ginormous, gas guzzling trucks. So GM made them. They would have gone under if they'd been ahead of their time and said, "Um...no. We're going to made the Chevy Volt. It's an electric car, very green, and it'll be great for the economy." You know what? All those people who wanted trucks would've taken their business elsewhere. And now, when suddenly there's a huge push to be green and save on gas money (a shift which has happened in no less than what?...three years?), people expect GM to completely re-invent their business and manufacturing. Like it's even POSSIBLE to change your product line that quickly. All you critics out there, GM is trying. They're giving the American people what they want. But a sudden shift in production can't move at the rate of speech that a sudden shift in demand does. So back up off GM. They're just practicing the standard business of Supply and Demand. Sheesh-a-meesh! It wasn't Detroit's "folly" that they were making huge trucks. It was America's folly for suddenly shifting gears and expecting a multi-billion dollar business to be able to shift gears just as fast.
That being said, here's a re-cap in what's going in the life of the Schumakers...
- We got Kristen, Jeff and the kids a Wii for Christmas and it just arrive a few days ago. We're excited that they'll have quality entertainment when they head back over to Ukarumpa :)
- Dan's liking his job! Hallelujah! He's happy with what he's doing and feels that he's getting incorporated more and more every day. He got his first paycheck yesterday and it was better than he thought it'd be. I'm so grateful when I see him out the door every day. I strongly believe that Dan is where God wants him to be right now. At this point in our lives, there's no need to have a giant income - we're low maintenance and only have ourselves to take care of. We're in no hurry for anything else.
- On Monday Aaron starts. He's going to take pretty much all my engineering responsibilities away from me and I couldn't be more thrilled. I'm a little curious as to what I'll DO. I've never understood what H.R. folks do all the time. I'm sure my time will be filled...I'm just curious to see exactly how :) One thing's for sure - the guilt that comes along with taking vacation and the anxiety and panic that come with returning to work after a week will be all but gone. Thank you, Aaron. Thank you.
- Me and Dan are going to see Over The Rhine around Halloween! I'm so excited. Over The Rhine is such falltime/winter music and I can't think of a better way to enter the Harvest season than with some sweet music. We saw them at Christmas in 2007 (I think?) and they played lots from Snow Angel and it was magical.
- I'm already starting to think of Christmas presents for people. I think it's just because it's getting cold (and by "cold" I mean 50 degrees) at night and it reminds me that fall is approaching. Also, I'm just a planner.
- My Tae Bo routine this week has been slacking. I haven't slept well at ALL any night this week and I woke up this morning with a sore throat and a raw chunk of back. (Yes. I accidentally fell asleep with the heating pad on my back. I woke up with a heat rash and it itched like nothing else. Apparently, in my drowsiness I scratched with too much gusto. I have red patched of raw skin over about a 6" area of my back. Um, ow!) I'm full of excuses. Next week will be better.
Okay. There's more stuff going on, but nothing I can speak of publically. In a few months' time there will be more to say. (No. I'm not pregnant. Sorry for all of you who were hoping.)
P.S. I just saw that my sister joined this group on facebook and I laughed out loud. "Hi, welcome to Hollister. Here's your gas mask and your flashlight."

oh so many comments! 1) you don't only have yourselves to take care of... you have your dependent missionary sister and her family. :) 2) oh my gosh! that heat rash fiasco sounds icky. i can't believe that happened. kind of sad and kind of funny at the same time. i mean, is it? i think it is. 3) you know that you want this to be our family photo. shoot! i just remembered that i wanted us to get a family photo when we were together this summer. oh well. hopefully we'll all be together again before we head back. if not, i'll just print this, frame it, and hang it in my house to remember you. heck, i might do that regardless. :) love you!
