Weekends: not for the weary

Seriously. What a whirlwind weekend. You can tell it was bad - it's taken me until Wednesday to recover and finally make a blog post :)

Saturday was spent mostly gearing up for Dan's birthday on Sunday. In a major twist, I actually got everything done that was on my to-do list, including (but not limited to): exercise, clean the bathrooms, vacuum, dust, sweep, mop, do laundry (4 loads), finish cleaning the upstairs closet (NIGHTMARE come true), bake Dan's b-day cake, frost the cake, clean the kitchen, and finally take a shower (oh...and clean the shower while I was in the shower because that's really the best way to do it). I felt like a really, really tired Wonder Woman by the end of the day. Church was a battle for me to stay awake, not to mention grocery shopping at 8pm.

But then...Sunday. GLORIOUS Sunday. It was pretty much the perfect day (and I wasn't even the birthday celebrator!). I slept in until 8:00 and made french press coffee and eggs benedict for breakfast. That was followed by laying in bed and watching a DVR'd movie until 11:00, then taking a shower, going out for Dan's birthday lunch, then coming home for cake, ice cream and presents.

(Side note: Sunday we spontaneously bought a desk. They were having a sale where, if you bought the desk, you got a free hutch. We'd been semi-planning on it anyway, but the hutch sealed the deal. We spent Monday/last night putting it together and I'm pretty much in love with it.)

Dan, playing video games all morning (with no judgment by me, as promised) on his birthday. (From the stairway. We're getting new furniture semi-soon and I'm thrilled about it!)

The eggs benedict story...

Cooking the ham

English muffs. I don't know why I haven't been buying and eating these for the last four years of my life. I love them. (Especially with peanut butter after a workout. Mmmm, protein!)

The beginnings of hollandaise sauce

Poaching the eggs - SO much easier than everyone says it will be!

Dan, obviously enjoying breakfast :)

My blurry, half eaten eggs benedict

Dan's golden birthday set-up that I was so proud of. In my excitement, we totally forgot to use the golden plates and forks, AND we forgot to light candles and sing happy birthday. Wtf, Heidi?! I was SO sad when I realized it!!

My morning coff

Dan's cake, chilled and ready to go!

Dan, opening my little joke-y present to him :)

It's no secret in this family that Dan doesn't use toothepaste because he "doesn't like the taste of it." (The infuriating part is that he doesn't have bad breath AND he's never had a cavity...so there's no argument I can use.) So anyway, I found bacon flavored toothpaste online and bought him some. It's the most disgusting smelling thing ever. I mean...it smells just like bacon...but the gross thing is...toothpaste isn't supposed to smell like bacon.

Pulling out the grill to put together (My birthday present to Dan)

Grill, all put together!

We wanted to use it right away, but the only thing we had readibly available was hot dogs :) Thursday we're having burgers though. Mmmmm, delish!

I re-enacted how the birthday should have gone by lighting candles and singing to Dan. (Seriously, I'm still SO sad that I let that happen...or not happen, I should say.)

On a non-birthday note: I returned the vase I bought at Great Indoors. It was too big and I realized that I only bought it because I was settling. So I sought this guy out at Pier 1. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'm going to buy a few sprays of flowering branches eventually, to give it a little spring-time life. (The fun thing is, I can change the branches out seasonally! But at Christmas, this is where our tree will go.) The branches look tall, I know, but the ceiling is about 12' high here? So they need height!

Dan, crawling through the hutch as we're putting together our new desk!

Poor guy...this is his "I'm frustrated that I never could get the hang of the hammer" face.

Our old, college-y desk. It's falling apart (note the bottom right corner) and WAY too small.

New desk! Love!

And these two are just because I saw them on failblog and lol'd.

HA! Wrong price, guys.
